A critical aspect of being online is your hosting platform and this extremely important area which is often overlooked by businesses seeking a new website. The reason hosting is an area overlooked by many is because at the time of getting a website the entire focus is the actual website itself and not the hosting platform it will sit on. As long as the site is visible on the internet is all that matters at the time.

Website hosting often isn’t given a serious thought until something goes horribly wrong, and it can - believe me. We’ve had so many clients come to us for hosting who have expressed this exact situation; ‘I just had NO idea about the importance of hosting’ - is a common expression.

Our ActiveHost system takes daily backups of all our customers individual sites plus we take a disaster recovery backup of our entire server everyday. So we can roll back a customers website to the most recent backup in the event of something going wrong. Or we can restore our entire server.

We have an online support ticket system and tech staff available to call for all email and site support.

key points about website hosting

If your business is in New Zealand or Australia you need hosting based over here.

You can get cheap hosting in India but if rankings, loading speed, performance, reliability and security mean anything to your business than you should forget about cheap hosting offers. What often happens is that you get a cheap hosting plan and it is hosted in India (or here on a slow, over-crowded server). When you load your site for the first time it's really slow - but then your computer caches the site. This means it's quicker next time you look at it. This often catches people out as they put the first loading time down to something else and then believe it's fine. But it's your customers looking at your site for the first time which matters - not you with a cached version of your site.

The hosting server equipment affects the performance of your website

If your website is sitting on a crowded server which is struggling with bandwidth and memory your website will be slow to load. If you have an e-commerce site it might even fail to function during heavy usage times in these conditions. All websites have different usage requirements and we make sure these are met for each one of the sites we build. your website performance.

Where and whom you host your website dictates the security of your site

If you have invested in a website and it becomes a critical part of your business then you should take an interest in where and how your website is hosted. Things can go wrong and the impact can be disasterous for a business. How much would it impact you right now if:

A) Your website went down. Is it backed up? How much would it affect your business if it couldn’t be revived?

B) Your emails stop working. Who can you contact to get them working asap?

Security against cyber attacks is critical.

In November 2018 our previous data hosting facility was hit with a sustained and serious DDoS cyber attack which took out a the network including the one that our servers were using. This ended up causing one of our servers to be shut-down. We quickly started migrating our customers across to our other server. Soon that was shut-down as well.

We knew that our customers needed their sites back up ASAP, but with no time-frame for when our servers would come back online, we quickly made the decision to move. This meant preparing a new server in a different facility and migrating all our customers across. Doing this is no easy feat and was a costly and time consuming task. A process that would normally take us a couple of weeks we did in 48 hours straight.

This is what managed hosting is, a team to deal with things like this for our customers. Moreover, this event caused us to totally re-think hosting in New Zealand. The truth is, NZ is grossly unprepared for todays level of cyber attacks. Most of our infrastructure is simply not robust enough.

Our servers are now with AWS in Sydney. This facility is HUGE, it dwarfs NZ data-centres and comes with levels of protection not available here. Sydney is close enough to have no impact on loading speeds and offers the best protection for our customers.

  • Huge AWS Datacentre in Sydney with the highest possible level of access security.
  • AWS shield - managed DDoS protection. Critically important - ask us why.
  • Full automated redundancy processes.
  • Critical system components backed up across multiple, isolated locations.
  • Continuously monitored service usage.
  • Business continuity plans for disasters including pandemic response policies.
  • Back up power supples.
  • Climate and temperature controlled environment.
  • Fire detection and suppression.
  • Leakage detection.
